About this deal

Hourglass is extremely well known for its strikingly beautiful ambient lighting powders, blushes & bronzers, as well as its super popular veil mineral primer. These are certainly worth the hype (although in terms of the luminosity and glow, I much prefer the Clinique Cheek Pop Blushes but they have much less wear time). These blushes were released by Hourglass to correspond with their Ambient Lighting Powders, meaning the blush shades are actually infused with the corresponding Ambient Lighting Powder shades. Ooh, I could swoon all day just by looking at the marbling and swirls of colors of these lovely blushes! I think my disappointment stems from the fact that I’m not getting the glow I thought these would perhaps produce. On one side the naturalness of the color is stunning and the formula simply beautiful to work with but on the other I really wish they had more of a glow to them versus the semi-matte finish they seem to produce. These have a velvety smooth finish and gives a slight glow to the skin, but not as “glowy” or “luminous” of a sheen as the Clinique Cheek Pop though.

For example, the “Dim Infusion” blush means that the blush is infused with the “Dim Light” powder, hence the marble-like swirly combination of the blush color and Dim Infusion powder on the pan. I think my beef with the formula was I expected something glow-y from the formula and that isn’t exactly what you get. These are a seamless formula that much is true. Although the texture is fairly powdery for a baked formula they still have a very soft, finely milled texture that blends beautifully on cheeks. The texture of the blush is very soft, silky, and smooth. Color excels at looking very natural and pretty yet not really producing any of the natural, soft focused light you might experience by using the Ambient Lighting Powder alone. These powders are very powdery when you swirl your brush on the pan, however they do not apply or look powdery on the skin at all. They’re so easy to smooth out! It is an equally spot-on drugstore dupe for the hourglass ambient lighting powder palette and ElleSees put together a great comparison post with swatches of all the colors side by side to show just how crazy similar the two palettes are.

Diffused Light is a translucent, yellowed beige with subtle, warm undertones and a natural finish. As a finishing powder, it had translucent coverage that applied a veil of natural-looking powder all-over the skin. The texture was silky-smooth, finely-milled, and easy to work with, and it performed consistently with past iterations I’ve tested of this shade (in palettes and as a standalone product). On a scale from fully matte to glowy/luminous, Clinique is at the very far end of the “glowy/luminous” range, while these Hourglass blushes are in the middle, some shades leaning more toward the “glowy/luminous” end. However, they still give the cheeks “life” and dimension because they’re not completely matte. It’s basically an improved version of Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder as you’re getting the benefits of a blush along with the soft focus of the powder. Visually Hourglass Mood Exposure is beautiful to behold. It’s a dusky shade of plum that comes across more as a bronze-y peach on my cheeks. I think perhaps it’ll appear different on a variety of skin tones. It almost gives my cheeks a sculpted, contoured look. It’s very pretty and natural.

Mood Exposure may possibly look cooler-toned on fairer, naturally cooler-toned skin (I can’t get it to look very plum on me, but in the pan, it looks cooler-toned). If you’re someone who expects to mix between the two finishing powders, then the size of each palette may not be a big deal, but using them alone is a pain point for those who like working with a traditional powder brush. I just find they get over-applied by using smaller brushes and/or take forever to apply. If blush and highlighter had a baby, this would be it. Rather than coating your cheeks in a a single shade, Hourglass has combined a blush with the brand's iconic Ambient Lighting Powder to create a multidimensional product that doesn’t sit flat or heavy on the skin, is lightweight, and perks up dull complexions. I love that this doesn’t go overboard in terms of highlighting—no one wants a disco ball cheek—but leaves just enough of a subtle shimmer to boost radiance. The powder is buildable and has a velvety feel that I’d gladly reapply. The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Palette is an EXTREMELY POPULAR palette since you get access to a few different shades of the ambient lighting powders to play with in your makeup routine.
