About this deal

By default you get the standard rainbow wave, and you can press Fn + F1 through F3 to check out two more included defaults: red with a breathing effect or all blue with WASD and 1234 in white. We begin the review of the keyboard and the keycaps with a look at the specifications of the keyboard below. This can be as simple as solid colors on WASD keys while other keys are another color or mode, or as complex as making keyboard art. Like many of its competitor keyboards, it features per-key illumination, which means that every single key has its own addressable RGB LED.

This software adds some new effects but has some from the older version missing (like the Flame effect), so it is not possible to recreate some profiles you could do before. The Logitech has better ergonomics thanks to its detachable wrist rest, and it comes with dedicated macro keys and a USB passthrough to plug in other peripherals. First of all, we can see the plastic lower half and the steel top plate which makes the frame-less enclosure. In-game, it felt almost as if my keyboard was reacting before I did, which helped ensure I could drop a grenade before I died in Halo Online and deliver justice from beyond the grave.

Not so glorious to be honest, they are plastic with rubber pads on them, if you use your keyboard on a rough surface I wouldn’t recommend moving it around too much because if you don't lift it up, they will come out with force. MX Brown and MX Red models followed in the spring, but even so, it was clear HyperX was just testing the waters. Since it is a “speed” switch, the operating travel distance is much shorter than the Cherry MX switches at only 1. Its compact TKL design frees up space for mouse movement in desktop setups where space is at a premium, and it also features a detachable USB-C cable for supreme portability.

But when it came time to make the Alloy FPS RGB, apparently HyperX opted for Kailh Silver Speed switches instead of Cherry.

There was a single model, the HyperX Alloy FPS, with an ultra-minimalist design, single-color backlighting (red), and Cherry MX Blue switches. Like most gaming keyboards, it’s matte-black, but what really sets it apart is the stunning combination of a steel frame and exposed LEDs.

HyperX has taken huge strides in the PC peripherals market in recent years, be it via headsets, mice, or keyboards. The polling rate is 1000Hz by default, Anti-ghosting is built in, as well as NKRO support, all right out of the box.

Thus, while these Silver Speed switches may be superb for gaming, I’d prefer to stick with Cherry MX Blues for long form typing. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). Still the competition has grown significantly since 2016 so there's many times the number of RGB illuminated models in the market currently compared to back then which means that it will be a lot harder for the Alloy FPS RGB to win gamers over like its predecessor.

While also not directly related to my in-game experience, I can’t state enough how gorgeous the backlighting looks. The names are at the left with the line "compact design with brilliant RGB effects" explain what this is all about. The light from the keys reflects off of the frame to provide an ambient glow that is genuinely cool and distinctive. The leading edge, where the box opens, you will find the name of the keyboard to the left, and the HyperX name on the right. At first, I was amazed by this, then instantly booted up several games and found that, as the keyboard’s name implies, these switches were amazing for FPS games.
