About this deal

The DualShock 4 isn’t the bastion for attractive, modern design by any stretch but it remains my favorite controller due to it being small enough for my hands and light-weight enough for my pained lupus hands. Unlike consoles that, roughly speaking, perform exactly the same from one location to the next, there’s no guarantee when it comes to game-streaming that we will all have the same experience. When I first started this experiment, I really thought at the end of it the controller would end up packed away in its box and not really seen again. Admittedly, this is probably the way we’ll continue to play games on Stadia, especially those that require ultra-specific timing (shooters and fighting games, as you’ll see in a second) or games that simply work better with a keyboard and mouse.

The other advantage of Stadia Pro is the ability to game in up to 4k resolution and HDR, along with surround sound audio. Stadia won’t be my primary gaming service, and I can live with out HDR to not have the recurring subscription. Thankfully, we've seen devs want to help Google Stadia players to avoid them losing their saves and progress. What Stadia promised (and mostly delivers) is a game-streaming experience that only requires the most basic of equipment: a Chromecast Ultra or your phone or your laptop, plus a controller of your choosing - either Google’s own Stadia Controller, the Xbox One controller or the PS4’s DualShock 4 gamepad. If you haven’t seen it yet, we posted our review in progress for the Google Pixel 4a, the best budget phone on the market right now.

Prasham Parikh is a freelancer at Android Police, and you can catch him writing how-to guides, features, and reviews on smartphones or pretty much anything that has a battery in it. Two years ago they gave away "Stadia Premiere Edition" kits for free, which was a Chromecast Ultra and a Stadia controller which I believe retailed for USD 100. Most games don’t play well at 4k anyway, so there is some dynamic scaling occurring to make that happen, but I personally notice the difference between having HDR and not having it much more than I notice the difference between 1080p and 4k streaming. Outside of work, you'll often find Luke trying to get his drone out of a tree, acquiring bruises at the skatepark or obsessively playing the latest RPG title.

When he's not writing or testing products, you can find Dylan playing lots of video games, working out, spending time with loved ones (especially his dog, Stevie), or watching reality TV. The same can be said for gaming hardware - once you've got what you need for Stadia, you're good for the next few years. It’s hard to describe precisely what my issue with the controller is aside from simply saying it’s just weird and explaining as best I can why it feels so very weird and awkward. Try to stream on any other phone and the app will either ask you to connect to Chromecast Ultra or reinforce the three main entry points with a wall of explainer text. Included with your Google Stadia bundle is a Stadia controller in Night Blue (for the Founders edition, with the more traditional white coming in the Premier), Chromecast Ultra, charge cable, and a USB C to A cable. Not only is Vic passionate about games, but she's also an avid mental health advocate who has appeared on both panels and podcasts to discuss mental health awareness. We also have the always fabulous, annual Google event coming up on September 30th (which we will have full coverage of). As of this writing, the only way to play Stadia on a TV is through a Chromecast Ultra and using the Stadia controller. From there, the controller talks directly to the Stadia servers instead of going first through the device the game is played on. Turning the controller on puts the Chromecast Ultra into a Stadia home screen, and a user can select a game and start playing.
