I highly recommend this comprehensive book for every neurodiverse learner working towards GCSE Maths. It explains and explores a range of specific learning differences and encourages the children to develop their metacognitive awareness. The book illustrates the effective use of a wide range of resources and manipulatives, and shows the children how important visualisation is in learning maths. For anyone with a child in Y 9, 10 or 11 who really struggles with maths, time spent familiarising your child with the techniques, strategies and resources would be time well spent and help build your child's confidence and understanding.

Their attitudes to education and their own self-belief will have been formed and informed by their experience of school up until that point. You should think about the fact that some students might not like reading about themselves in this style or might not be able to read it at all. Students will be able to put their newly acquired knowledge to the test with the book’s plenty of practise problems. I could get on board with this chapter, the grid method is common, easily used wherever I am (even if my hand drawn grids look a little tipsy) and quite simply, simple. Exam preparation tips, a concise glossary, and a collection of photocopiable materials are included in the book’s last chapter.It’s intriguing that the focus is on the numerical side of things rather than on more abstract concepts like probability or shape and space. GCSE Maths for Neurodivergent Learners has been written to enable children to understand their neurodiversity better and to understand how it impacts on their learning. We really need to kick that notion into the long grass and have these simple manipulatives available for all children, all the time.

When used correctly, as objects to think with, manipulatives can have a profound effect on a learner and not only in terms of their understanding. Teaching would be very simple if every child in the class were identical in every respect, but they are not and that is what makes teaching so challenging and, ultimately, so rewarding. It offers unique insight into why you may find maths extra challenging and gives practical advice on how you can adapt your studying processes to suit the way that you learn best. I was hoping to find some exam advice on adapting the use of Napier’s bones or perhaps something I hadn’t thought of other than scribbling out my timestables on a piece of squared paper and surreptitiously folding it over.
