About this deal

I was immediately hired at Marvel in the production department on Neal's recommendation, and they still didn't even want to see my portfolio.

I have an incredible fondness for the original John Romita Spider-Man books and even the Ben Reilly sagas, but these books - the very few that I managed to read back in the day, truly showed me how high the art could be elevated to.

The first daily strip, which carried Adams' signature, appeared November 26, 1962; a color Sunday strip was added September 20, 1964.

Not everything works, but when Haney hits his stride on a World War II tale or the story of an invulnerable rabble rouser, the results are very good, and the art is superb. You could make a legitimate argument that the guy is Batman’s actual arch-nemesis, and Christopher Nolan even chose the character to appear as the featured villain in Batman Begins. In any case, it's a great collection for your shelf and I'm happy that mine has a commissioned Batman bust by Neal on the inside cover from a later Expo I'd attended.

Although they made all sorts of additions and clarifications to the Batman mythos that have grounded decades of stories, perhaps the greatest single thing that O’Neil and Adams brought to their Batman tales was a rich and heavy atmosphere. Story-wise, the early World's Finest stuff is just what you would expect from the late 60's, very tongue-in-cheek, and corny. Forced to choose between tending to an injured victim or pursuing a criminal, there’s no choice for this version of Batman. Trying to take a holiday in Ireland, the Caped Crusader part of his brain is still working away, his apophenia kicking into overdrive.
