Complex Benedictine DOM liqueur is truly deserving of its name ‘Deo Optimo Maximo’ meaning ‘To God most good, most great. Today, four separate batches of the herbs and spices are distilled in copper pot stills dating back to Le Grand’s time at the Palais Bénédictine, then aged in oak barrels for eight months and blended with honey and saffron. It's a simple mix of brandy and Bénédictine and became so popular that the brand created a pre-mixed version with French brandy. Bénédictine is good served long with soda or tonic and is closely associated with classic cocktails such as the Singapore Sling, Vieux Carré and La Louisiane. With an aroma of spice - warm cloves and cardamon - and a sweetness of honey no wonder it is thought to be the first branded medicine.
